My Growing Philosophy

I believe in designing my instruction and my assessment to be appropriate to students’ stages of development, learning styles, strengths and needs. I believe that I should adjust my instruction to accommodate the learning differences or needs of students.

I believe that we have education to bring forth what is within oneself and to bring out ones potential. I will help children to develop their potential by believing in them as capable individuals. I will assist children in discovering who they are so they can express their own opinions and nurture their own ideas. In order for them to do this they will need the appropriate assessments and instructions, according to their developmental stage, learning style, strengths and needs. Every classroom presents a unique community of learners that varies not only in abilities but in learning styles. My role as a teacher is to give children the tools with which to cultivate their own garden of knowledge. I will teach to the needs of each child so that all learners can feel capable and successful. I will present the curriculum that involves the interest of the children and makes learning relevant to life. I will incorporate themes, integrated units, projects, group work, individual work and hands-on learning in order to create active learners.

I believe in an inclusive classroom providing opportunities for different performance modes. I believe that there are different roles in the instructional process to accommodate content, purpose, and the learner’s needs. I believe in accessing appropriate services or resources when needed.

Inclusion is a key ingredient in the makeup of the classroom, and I support inclusion through practices such as using alternative assessments (formative and summative) and preparing lessons which appeal to different learning styles. I will activate, acquire, and apply as well as assess (formative and summative) all learners in a variety of methods. I will incorporate tests, group assessments, self assessments, rubrics based on a set of criteria and above all ongoing observation. I will direct my lessons to the child’s multiple intelligences allowing each student to shine. I will access resources, and appropriate services when needed. Each student is exceptional and what we have in the classrooms might not be enough. I will present the curriculum to the best interest of the child, so that all learners can feel capable and successful.

I believe in using my knowledge of different cultural contexts within the community and to connect those cultures with the learner in my classroom through interaction and assignments.

Each school presents a unique community of learners that varies in cultures, beliefs and learning styles. My role as a teacher is to use the community services and resources to educate the students about what the world consists of, how it is relevant to life, and to incorporate hands on learning to make them active learners. Students will be active participants in the community with interaction within the community as well as with ongoing assignments. I will tie into the neighbouring and world community to help children become caring and active members of society.

I believe in creating a creative learning community that respects all individual learners and their differences at the same time, incorporating restitution.

It was once said that the arts celebrate multiple perspectives, and that the arts show that problems have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer. The arts teach children to make good judgements about qualitative relationships, regardless of the limits of our language. They also teach students that small actions can have large effects, that what we do matters. I believe that a creative learning community will help the students develop their potential and bring out their voice. They will create respect for not only themselves, their community but all living things. They will value each other’s similarities and differences at the same time thinking of themselves and their values
